Train, bike, legs, car — the combination got me everywhere. And usually first.

I was never afraid of being overtaken. Not because I was the fastest, but because I knew how to keep myself at the front. I kept making myself present.

But is that still true today?

From hands to heads

New technologies have so far created more jobs than they destroyed in macroeconomic terms. But that did not happen without shocks, not without bankruptcies, not without families who saw their security evaporate. The big picture offers little comfort if you are the one whose profession disappears.

First the hands lost ground. People who got their hands dirty were replaced by sturdy machines. Then came the routines. And now people who were used to working with their heads notice that a large part of their thinking capacity is also shifting to AI.

Lawyers. Journalists. IT people. People we did not expect it of.

Moreover: today we are not at all sure that this combination of robotisation, automation and AI will once again produce new jobs in which people can be meaningfully engaged. The certainty of the past is gone.

And me? Do I feel in the meantime that I too can be overtaken? Take marketing for Outward Bound. Or specifically putting an event like Het Nieuwe Normaal on the market. Will I keep succeeding in being heard?

As a young man I played double bass. Big, visible, present. An instrument you saw standing there before you heard it. Maybe that suited me. I think I always found ways not to disappear into the background.

But today anyone can arrange an amplifier or a sound box as big as my bass. Agencies, systems, companies, people like me: we are all trying to get through the same noise. “When so much is being broadcast, we read and listen less and less. Even when we know the sender.”

As a result the question shifts. The machine can always produce more than I can. Playing louder is therefore no longer an answer. And so the question becomes: which piece do I want to play? For whom? In which ensemble?

Giving up your corner

At Outward Bound we sometimes give an assignment that goes like this: “You get preparation time, then you go outside blindfolded to lay out two overlapping squares on the ground with a rope.”

If the group has more than eight people, some count the corners, do the sums and conclude: I am not needed here. I am only in the way. The assignment gets solved without their active contribution anyway.

Simply standing still seems like a solution for a moment.

But when we ask follow-up questions afterwards, it rarely sounds satisfying. People found it strange to be there and at the same time have no real place. Sometimes even painful. Even more painful when others do not notice that someone was standing there for nothing.

We can let the machine run. But in the meantime we also have to ask what happens to our talent and our skill if we simply stay standing.

Because that is a choice I do not want to make.

An hour, perhaps. A career, no.

Every layer has had its turn

Physical work → machines

Repetition → robots

Procedures → automation

Knowledge and judgement → AI

And now?

What I know for sure: a machine does not organise appetite. It does not give direction. It does not sense what a team needs. It does not notice when someone is dropping out. It does not know where someone needs to be invited again to bring in their talent.

That remains human work. The question is how you organise it — and how you stay nourished by it yourself.

I wrote about this earlier in my previous newsletter, The problem was solved. The team had not solved it: when I asked what remains when the machine takes over the quick work? That question becomes more concrete here.

Work that feels right

That realisation came in last month at the wedding party of a good friend.

The afternoon began at Hilde’s place, Pepper & Mint in Borgerhout. She has converted her living room: an open kitchen, a large laid table, seasonal ingredients. A crew around her whom she involves. Everything tailored to those two people: who they are, who they had invited, what that day had to get right.

At some point the conversation at the table turned to work. What job do you have?

Some professions sound bigger than others. But I felt very clearly: what Hilde does is a beautiful answer to the question of what meaningful work can be. She brings people together. She makes something tailored. She makes sure an important day is not only organised, but also feels right. For those who are getting married. For those who sit at the table.

That is human scale. Not small. Not without ambition. But organised so that people feel seen and the work acquires meaning.

I recognise that at Outward Bound too. We can work with a hundred people. But then we organise it so that people can also search, speak and contribute in smaller circles. Not because scale is wrong. But because involvement needs a place where someone knows your name, sees your contribution and notices when you risk falling silent.

Where meaningful work begins

Is there still work for me? Yes. But perhaps less in broadcasting harder, producing faster or playing bigger. More in choosing more precisely where my talent and skill really make a difference. In contact that is reciprocal. In groups where people do not give up their corner, but investigate anew what contribution is asked of them.

That is also the question we are taking on 11 June to Het Nieuwe Normaal at De Hoorn in Leuven. How do you keep giving direction as a leader when the map has changed? Where is there still work that is human, meaningful and of lasting value? The machine will be able to do a lot. Precisely for that reason we have to choose again what we want to use our time, attention and talent for.

Stay Human.

I am Kobe. I trained as a psychologist. As director of a reception centre for refugees at Fedasil, as a trainer and consultant in Ethiopia, and now as Executive Director of Outward Bound Belgium. What drives, connects and sometimes holds people back: that is what I like to stay curious about. From boardroom to rock face, the common thread in my life is how we can remain human in a world that is spinning out of control.

Sources

Stefan Klein, Tijd.
