Boards are full of intelligent and committed individuals. Nevertheless, research shows that boards regularly make suboptimal decisions.
Why is this?
This is largely the result of (dysfunctional) dynamics within the board. ‘Board dynamics’ regard the board as a complex social system and zoom in on components such as interactions (norms, culture, influence, trust, cohesion), decision-making pitfalls, and the behaviour of individual board members.
Boards that invest in awareness of these board dynamics significantly increase their effectiveness. When boards get the chance to spend quality time together under expert guidance, the dialogue deepens and these (dysfunctional) dynamics come to the surface. That leads to more valuable insights that can be put to better use in decision-making.
The (On)board days provide the framework for this: a setting in which board members reflect on their collaboration and learn how trust and shared impact can grow.
